Bulletin 2-28-24

Feb 28- What Kind of King is this?
As He testified before Pilate that His kingdom is not of this world so are we, by our Baptism, “fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19)

Bulletin 2-21-2024

Feb 21- From earliest days the Christian Church employed the weeks before Easter—what came to be called the season of Lent—as the time of the year to prepare candidates for the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, the catechumenate. Paul wrote, “We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Our midweek Lenten services prepare us to consider our identity and connection with the Passion of Christ as the baptized children of God. Today, we see how John puts our attention on two events happening at the same time—the interrogation of Jesus before the high priest and the interrogation of Peter in the courtyard—and we see how these interrogations confront and comfort us.

Ash Wednesday Bulletin

https://www.trinitylutheransavannah.com/editoruploads/files/Bulletin%20Ash%20Wednesday%202024.docx

Feb 14- Marked and Redeemed by Christ the Crucified
Marked. During this special service for the beginning of our Lenten journey, we will be marked—marked with ashes. These ashes stand as a stark reminder of the dust of death, which is the wages of sin—Adam’s sin, the world’s sin, and our personal sin. But notice the shape in which the ashes are applied to our foreheads: the shape of the cross. “Remember that you are dust,” we hear. Powerful words, yes. But may we also have ears to hear the words even more powerful: “Your sins are forgiven!” The Gospel assures us that we have been marked and redeemed by Christ, the Crucified. The One who entered into our world to shape our dust and breathe new life into our death is the One who has named us and claimed us to be His own. He took on the ashes of our death. He became sin for us, “so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Growing in God’s Word to Share Christ’s Love

Our Mission:
Led by God, equipped as disciples through Word and Sacrament,
we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach out with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all.

AS WE GATHER TODAY

What do you do when you wait? What do others do? Whether sitting in the lobby of a doctor’s office, or stuck behind a mile of cars in traffic, or counting down the days until an exciting event—what is done while waiting? Some seek distraction through technology to pass the time, others watch the time slowly pass, and still others wait impatiently, made known through verbal and nonverbal ways. How about when it comes to Jesus? What do we do while we wait for Him? Rather than seeking distractions to pass the time or feverishly looking at a clock while growing impatient, we are instead called to wait for Him in faith. We do not know the day nor the hour, but we wait in faith with more than oil in our lamps—faith in our hearts and on our lips until we meet the Bridegroom at the marriage feast.

INVOCATION

    P     In the name of the Father and of the (†) Son and of the Holy Spirit.
    C    Amen.                                                                                Matthew 28:19b

    P    Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    C    who made heaven and earth.                                               Psalm 124:8

    P    Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.                                                                                      [Luke 18:13]
    C    Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

    P    Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (†) Son and of the Holy Spirit.

   C    Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALM    Psalm 70

P         1Make haste, O God, to deliver me!
C            O LORD, make haste to help me!

P         2Let them be put to shame and confusion     who seek my life!
C         Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor who desire my hurt!

P         3Let them turn back because of their shame
C            who say, “Aha, Aha!”

P     4May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you!
C     May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!”

P     5But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God!
C     You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay!

    ALL    Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
        as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

P    The LORD be with you.                                                            2 Timothy 4:22
C    And also with you.

    P    Let us pray.
Lord God, heavenly Father, send forth Your Son to lead home His bride, the Church, that with all the company of the redeemed we may finally enter into His eternal wedding feast; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
    C    Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON    Amos 5:18–24

18Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD!
   Why would you have the day of the LORD?
It is darkness, and not light,
   19as if a man fled from a lion,
   and a bear met him,
or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall,
   and a serpent bit him.
20Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light,
   and gloom with no brightness in it?
21“I hate, I despise your feasts,
   and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
22Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings,
   I will not accept them;
and the peace offerings of your fattened animals,
   I will not look upon them.
23Take away from me the noise of your songs;
   to the melody of your harps I will not listen.
24But let justice roll down like waters,
   and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

    A     This is the Word of the LORD.
    C    Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON    1 Thessalonians 4:13–18

   13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

    A    This is the Word of the LORD.
    C    Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE      John 20:31

HOLY GOSPEL    Matthew 25:1–13

    P            The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter.
    C    Glory to You, O Lord.

1[Jesus said:] “The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

P    This is the Gospel of the LORD.
C    Praise to You, O Christ.

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one LORD Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried.  And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven     and sits at the right hand of the Father.  And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the LORD and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.  And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT

The Sacrament, or Lord's Supper, is a special gift from God that brings us into personal communion with Jesus Christ. "In, with and under" the bread and wine we receive His body and blood for forgiveness and renewal. If you are a repentant sinner, come to the table expecting to receive God's wonderful gifts for you!

Communicants will take their own wine cups as they are passed. Those requiring non-alcoholic grape juice will take the cups with white grape juice from the middle of the tray.

OUR EXAMINATION

P    In preparation for Holy Communion, St. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29, “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.”  So that we may properly examine ourselves prior to receiving the Lord’s Supper, I ask you to reflect on these questions:

•    Do you repent of all your sins of thought, word, and deed?
•    Do you believe that Jesus Christ is your only Savior from all sin, Satan, and death?
•    Do you believe that the Risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and that in, with, and under the bread and wine you receive His true Body and Blood?

If you answer in faith "Yes!" to these questions, and are properly instructed, you are invited to come forward and partake of the LORD'S Supper during Distribution. If you are unable to answer yes to any of these questions, you are invited to come forward, cross your arms as Pastor approaches you and receive a blessing. By your coming forward, "You proclaim the LORD'S death until He comes."

PREFACE

P    The LORD be with you.                                            2 Timothy 4:22
C    And also with you.

P    Lift up your hearts.                                                     [Colossians 3:1]
C    We lift them to the Lord.

    P    Let us give thanks to the LORD, our God.                           [Psalm 136]
    C    It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

    P    It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places  give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all,  we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

SANCTUS ~ Holy, Holy, Holy       Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9

 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

    P     Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had  mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him  should not perish but have eternal life.

        In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life.  Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

        We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ.  Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink  of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood.

        Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

LORD'S PRAYER         Matthew 6:9-13

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
THE WORDS OF OUR LORD     Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;
    Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
    P    Our LORD Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said:  "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance  of Me.”  In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had  given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the remission of  sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

AS WE GATHER TODAY

On this day when we observe and celebrate the Reformation, our Readings point us to remember the struggles and eventual insights of Martin Luther. God used these struggles and insights of one man in Germany to reshape the Church and let the true Gospel resound all over the world. Luther struggled as a young monk and professor because he had been taught that he, by his works of righteousness, might possibly then qualify to be loved by God. This teaching caused him nearly to despair entirely. But then he read Romans 3:23–24: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Struck by God’s Word here, Luther recognized that it is Christ’s work of righteousness—His dying and rising for sinners like Luther—that saves. Today is a celebration of what Christ has done for sinners like Luther and us.

Pastor:  All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
People: and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Pastor: God calls us to confess our sins. We observe a moment of silence for personal reflection and confession.

A time of silence.

Pastor: God, You formed us in the womb, and You shape our lives to love and honor You and our neighbors.
People: Yet we are by nature sinful and separated from You. We sin against You in thoughts, words, and actions. For the sake of Jesus, who was tempted in every way as we are and yet without sin, we pray for Your forgiveness.

Pastor: “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Therefore, by the command of Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Thanks be to God. Amen.

FIRST READING Revelation 14:6–7 (In a vision, John sees an angel who declares to all peoples and nations, “Fear God and give Him glory.”)

  6Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Lector:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

CHOIR ANTHEM          “God is Our Refuge”           Psalm 46 by Allen Pote

EPISTLE Romans 3:19–28 (“We are justified by His grace as a gift, through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”)

  19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
  21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
  27Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Lector:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL John 8:31–36  (Jesus declares that to believe in Him is to be
truly free.)

Pastor:  The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.
People: Glory to You, O Lord.

31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Pastor:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.

CREED Nicene Creed

People: I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
 and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
 and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life  of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor: Filled with God’s grace, founded in faith, and nourished by the Word, let us offer our prayers for the Church, the world, and for all people according to their needs. For the Church, that we faithfully use our freedom in the Gospel to love and to serve both God and neighbor. Preserve the Church from discord and strife. Let the world see that we are Yours, O Lord, by our love for one another. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: For those entrusted to govern our nation, state, and local community: Guide them and help them to care justly and mercifully for all the people they serve. For the members of our armed forces, for victims of warfare and violence, and for our enemies, we pray that peace may prevail for all. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Let us pray for those who are suffering, those we have named and those we name silently in our hearts. [Time of silence]. We pray that their pain and anxiety be relieved according to God’s will. For those who mourn the death of loved ones, we pray that God calm their troubled hearts and give them peace to face the days ahead in the confidence that He will never forsake them. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Let us pray for those who visit this congregation, that they may find here a hospitality that bears witness to the kingdom of heaven. For all who travel, we pray that they arrive safely at their destinations. For all the households of this congregation, grant that they be havens of peace and places where Christ is proclaimed and lived. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.

Additional bids may be added.

Pastor: Let us pray for this holy assembly, that together we use our Gospel freedom responsibly. By the Holy Spirit, grant that we all undergo ongoing reformation of our hearts and minds and in the proper stewardship of our time, talents, and money, continuing to be faithful partners in ministry. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Let us give thanks for those who have gone before us and are with the Lord, especially Martin Luther and all reformers of the Church. Sustain us in this earthly journey so that, trusting in the promises of Jesus, we, too, will know the joy of all those who have died in the faith. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Holy God, hear these prayers of Your faithful people. By Your grace, grant us those things You see that we need for the sake of our Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ.
People: Amen.

OFFERING

CHOIR ANTHEM    “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)”

 SACRAMENT 

The Sacrament, or Lord's Supper, is a special gift from God that brings us into personal communion with Jesus Christ. "In, with and under" the bread and wine we receive His body and blood for forgiveness and renewal. If you are a repentant sinner, come to the table expecting to receive God's wonderful gifts for you!

Communicants will take their own wine cups as they are passed. Those requiring non-alcoholic grape juice will take the cups with white grape juice from the middle of the tray.

OUR EXAMINATION

Pastor: In preparation for Holy Communion, St.

PREFACE 2 Timothy 4:22

Pastor:  The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

Pastor:  Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

PROPER PREFACE

Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose perfect righteousness is given to us freely through faith in Him. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

SANCTUS

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Pastor: You, O Lord, freely give us what we could never attain for ourselves—a right relationship with You through the righteousness of Jesus Christ. We thank You for giving us the body of Christ to eat and the blood of Christ to drink, Your gift of grace that forgives our sins and joins us together as the Body of Christ.
People: For all this it is our duty and delight to thank and praise, serve and obey You. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20;
1 Corinthians 11:23–25

Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My  body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My  blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20

Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Pastor: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

LORD’S PRAYER Matthew 6:9–13

People: Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
 as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
 as we forgive those
 who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.

PAX DOMINI

Pastor:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
People: Amen.

Our Mission:

AS WE GATHER TODAY

One of the most famous sayings of Jesus appears to provide a neat and tidy divide between the worldly power of government and the spiritual power of the Church. Is that really what Christ is doing? Is He marking the divide or is He commending all things and the ultimate authority to the saving purpose of our heavenly Father? The things that belong to Caesar appear to be valuable in the moment but are temporary and temporal. The things of God are everything—all things in heaven and earth. They are eternal. In reality, there is nothing that does not belong to God, although the Lord assigns different people with the different responsibilities of church and state. In this question of who is in charge, God makes it clear that He is always in charge and always working for our salvation.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 45:1–7

1Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus,
  whose right hand I have grasped,
to subdue nations before him
  and to loose the belts of kings,
to open doors before him
  that gates may not be closed:
2“I will go before you
  and level the exalted places,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
  and cut through the bars of iron,
3I will give you the treasures of darkness
  and the hoards in secret places,
that you may know that it is I, the LORD,
  the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
4For the sake of my servant Jacob,
  and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
  I name you, though you do not know me.
5I am the LORD, and there is no other,
  besides me there is no God;
  I equip you, though you do not know me,
6that people may know, from the rising of the sun
  and from the west, that there is none besides me;
  I am the LORD, and there is no other.
7I form light and create darkness,
  I make well-being and create calamity,
  I am the LORD, who does all these things.”

A  This is the Word of the LORD.

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10

1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace.
2We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

A This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE     John 6:68

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 22:15–22

P         The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-second chapter.

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle [Jesus] in his talk. 16And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

P This is the Gospel of the LORD.

Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT (11:00)

P Lift up your hearts.                                                  [Colossians 3:1]

P  Let us give thanks to the LORD, our God.                          [Psalm 136]

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places     give thanks to You, holy LORD, almighty Father, everlasting God, through     Jesus Christ, our LORD, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by     His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

P  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those     whom You created and sent Your only begotten Son into our flesh to bear our     sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation      accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on     the cross.

 Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to     forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us      faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own     testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate     with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has     no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You      alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy     Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD  Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;
Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
P  Pastor Webb spoke these words over the elements and consecrated them when
he said: Our LORD Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”  In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Our Vision:
Growing in God’s Word to Share Christ’s Love

Our Mission:
Led by God, equipped as disciples through Word and Sacrament,
we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach out with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all.

AS WE GATHER TODAY

We all have a past. From the people whose names are known to all to the anonymous known only to God, we all come with history that has marked us for sin and death. The gift of God is that He forgives that sinful past, removes all condemnation, and bestows a future upon us. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the story of Paul. The Lord forgave his past, restored him beyond every expectation, and gave him a future serving as an apostle in life with the prize of eternal life in death. No matter who we are, we have the same promise. God forgives all our sin, restores us to be His own and live under Him in His kingdom, and bears in us the fruit of the Kingdom now and the prize of everlasting life in His own time. All of this we know now by faith, trusting in the righteousness that God has given to us in Christ and not in ourselves.

C Amen.                                                                                 [John 20:19-23]

SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALM Psalm 80:7-19

P   7Restore us, O God of hosts;
C   let your face shine, that we may be saved!

P  8You brought a vine out of Egypt;
C you drove out the nations and planted it.

P  9You cleared the ground for it;
C it took deep root and filled the land.

P  10The mountains were covered with its shade,
C the mighty cedars with its branches.

P  11It sent out its branches to the sea
C and its shoots to the River.

P  12Why then have you broken down its walls,
C so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?

P  13The boar from the forest ravages it,
C and all that move in the field feed on it.

P  14Turn again, O God of hosts!
C Look down from heaven, and see;

P  have regard for this vine,
15the stock that your right hand planted,
C and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.

P  16They have burned it with fire; they have cut it down;
C may they perish at the rebuke of your face!

P  17But let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
C the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!

P  18Then we shall not turn back from you;
C give us life, and we will call upon your name!

P  19Restore us, O LORD God of hosts!
C Let your face shine, that we may be saved!

ALL Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
 as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

P Let us pray.
Gracious God, You gave Your Son into the hands of sinful men who killed Him. Forgive us when we reject Your unfailing love, and grant us the fullness of Your salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 5:1-7

1Let me sing for my beloved
  my love song concerning his vineyard:
My beloved had a vineyard
  on a very fertile hill.
2He dug it and cleared it of stones,
  and planted it with choice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
  and hewed out a wine vat in it;
and he looked for it to yield grapes,
  but it yielded wild grapes.
3And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem
  and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
4What more was there to do for my vineyard,
  that I have not done in it?
When I looked for it to yield grapes,
  why did it yield wild grapes?
5And now I will tell you
  what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge,
  and it shall be devoured;
I will break down its wall,
  and it shall be trampled down.
6I will make it a waste;
  it shall not be pruned or hoed,
  and briers and thorns shall grow up;
I will also command the clouds
  that they rain no rain upon it.
7For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts
  is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah
  are his pleasant planting;
and he looked for justice,
  but behold, bloodshed;
for righteousness,
  but behold, an outcry!

A  This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 3:4b–14

If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness, under the law blameless. 7But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
  12Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

A This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 21:33–46

P         The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

33[Jesus said:] “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. 35And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”
45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.

Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT (11:00)

Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a      second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-
 giving tree for all who trust in Him.

Amen.
THE WORDS OF OUR LORD  Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;
Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
P Our LORD Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and     when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said:     “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you.

PAX DOMINI ~ The Peace of the Lord   John 20:19

AS WE GATHER TODAY

Among the flags of the fifty states of the United States, one of the most distinctive is the flag of Rhode Island. It is a simple design featuring a golden anchor on a field of white, surrounded by thirteen golden stars which commemorate the fact that Rhode Island was the thirteenth of the original colonies to become a state officially. There is just one word on the flag: hope. The likely inspiration for the inclusion of this word is from Hebrews: “We who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul” (Hebrews 6:18–19). The founders of the colony of Rhode Island were hopeful of finding a place of refuge to express their Christian faith freely in their times. In our time, we also are people of Christian hope, as well as people abiding in faith who are given to charity in Christ’s name.

C Amen.                                                                                 [John 20:19-23]

SERVICE OF THE WORD

PSALM Psalm 25:1-10

P   1To you, O LORD,
C   I lift up my soul.

P   2O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame;
C   let not my enemies exult over me.

P   3Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
C   they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

P   4Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
C   teach me your paths.

P   5Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation;
C   for you I wait all the day long.

P   6Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love,
C   for they have been from of old.

P   7Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
C   according to your steadfast love remember me,
  for the sake of your goodness, O LORD!

P  8Good and upright is the LORD;
C  therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

P  9He leads the humble in what is right,
C and teaches the humble his way.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Ezekiel 18:1–4, 25–32

1The word of the LORD came to me: 2“What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? 3As I live, declares the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. 4Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die. . . .
25“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? 26When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. 27Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. 28Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?
   30“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. 31Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live.”

A  This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 2:1–4, 14–18

1If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. . . .
   14Do all things without grumbling or questioning, 15that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

A This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 21:23–27

P         The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

23When [Jesus] entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

P This is the Gospel of the LORD.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLES' CREED

 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy  Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT (8:30)

Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a      second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-
 giving tree for all who trust in Him.

Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD  Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;

Our Vision:
Growing in God’s Word to Share Christ’s Love

Our Mission:
Led by God, equipped as disciples through Word and Sacrament,
we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach out with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all.

AS WE GATHER TODAY

When Paul wrote to his co-worker Timothy that he was “bound with chains as a criminal” (2 Timothy 2:9), he knew well the situation he was in. Acts 16 relates the time that he was thrown in jail in Philippi without benefit of a trial. He was later jailed in Jerusalem and then Caesarea and finally at Rome, where he was under a type of house arrest for two years. The final chapter of Acts finds Paul as a captive one more time, accepting this imprisonment as a prelude to his death. He writes to Timothy “the time of my departure has come” (2 Timothy 4:6). In the centuries since Paul gave his prison witness, countless Christian men and women have been imprisoned for their Gospel witness. We are encouraged to be faithful witnesses in our time by Paul, who writes to his young associate Timothy: “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Timothy 6:11–12a). Paul’s words from prison are good instruction for every situation!

P  In the name of the Father and of the (†) Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.                                                                                Matthew 28:19b

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive      our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.             1 John 1:8-9

Kneel or Be Seated

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

 (Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.)

P Most merciful God,
C we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned     against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by     what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart;     we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your     present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ,     have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may      delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy      name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake     forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by     His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father     and of the (†) Son and of the Holy Spirit.                                   [John 20:19-23]
C Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 55:6–9

6“Seek the LORD while he may be found;
  call upon him while he is near;
7let the wicked forsake his way,
  and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him,
  and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
  neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
9For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
  so are my ways higher than your ways
  and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 1:12–14, 19–30

12I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. . . .
19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.
27Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

A This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE     John 6:68

 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 20:1–16

P         The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twentieth chapter.

 1[Jesus said:] “The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ 5So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ 7They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ 8And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ 9And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ 16So the last will be first, and the first last.”

P This is the Gospel of the LORD.

Amen.

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT (11:00)

C Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER      Matthew 6:9-13

Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
P Our LORD Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and     when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said:     “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you.

This weekend on the Church calendar (September 16), the bishop Cyprian of Carthage is remembered. As a Church leader in the third century, a time of Roman persecution, Cyprian had to deal with the problem of Christians who denied the faith under persecution but later wanted to be restored to the fellowship of the Lord. Cyprian helped craft a response to the situation that was based on forgiveness, allowing a lapsed Christian to be reinstated after a time in which they lived out their restored faithful confession. His own faithfulness unto death was fully demonstrated as he was executed by Roman authorities for his Christian beliefs in AD 258. Speaking words of forgiveness and living them out can come with a price—but is Christlike in every way!

O God, our refuge and strength, the author of all godliness, hear the devout prayers of Your Church, especially in times of persecution, and grant that what we ask in faith we may obtain; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 50:15–21

  15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died, 17‘Say to Joseph, Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

A  This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON Romans 14:1–12

1As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
5One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.
10Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11for it is written,
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall confess to God.”
12So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

A This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE     John 6:68

 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 18:21–35

P         The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eighteenth chapter.

 21Peter came up and said to [Jesus], “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.
23“Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

P This is the Gospel of the LORD.

C Amen.

Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD  Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;

Our Vision:
Growing in God’s Word to Share Christ’s Love

Our Mission:
Led by God, equipped as disciples through Word and Sacrament,
we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach out with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all.

AS WE GATHER TODAY

Though you may be familiar with Jesus’ parable of the sower, you may be surprised to hear that you do not really know it yet! That’s because on the one hand, the Word of God does not change. Yet on the other hand, we need to keep hearing it again and again, because our circumstances are constantly changing. The parable of the sower tells of this mystery. The seed is God’s Word, God’s work of planting repentance and faith in ears who hear. We may think of the various kinds of soil Jesus mentions to be various sorts of people. Actually, however, He is describing each individual in their changing circumstances. There are times when we are “good soil,” that is, we understand God’s Word and take comfort in it. There are other times, however, when we either cannot or will not hear it. Sometimes we become hard paths, rocky or distracted by worries or fears. For this reason, God never ceases planting, speaking, and growing faith in the heart, and we return repeatedly to continue hearing, reading, learning, and receiving God’s Word because He never gives up on you.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 55:10–13

10“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
   and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
   giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
   it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
   and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
12“For you shall go out in joy
   and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
   shall break forth into singing,
   and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
   instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall make a name for the LORD,
   an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

A  This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON Romans 8:12–17

12So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

A This is the Word of the LORD.
C Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE     John 6:68

 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

P         The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the thirteenth chapter.

 1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. 7Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9He who has ears, let him hear. . . .
18“Hear then the parable of the sower: 19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

P This is the Gospel of the LORD.

C Amen.

Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD  Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;
